The X-Men #1 (1963)
The original X-Men converge on Magneto in a clash of powers. Trace the debut cover through new teams, alternate worlds and playful reinventions.
This catalog follows the original cover’s composition across published comics and announced editions. Trade dress, virgin, foil and sketch treatments are described in edition notes. Connecting sets identify their participating issues and panels.
Verified records have source support for the exact cover and target. Partial records retain attribution or edition gaps. Reprints, interior-scene homages, different targets and unresolved references are listed separately below.
Cover dated September 1963; on sale July 2, 1963. Sol Brodsky is the principal cover-inking attribution; GCD also records a tentative Frank Giacoia contribution. Paul Reinman inked the interior story and is not automatically credited for the cover. Jack Kirby’s debut cover places Magneto in the foreground against five attacking X-Men, establishing the arrangement reinterpreted throughout this lineage. Image presentation: a clean digital reproduction of the original cover art.

- Amazing Adventures #1
Reproduces the original Kirby cover with altered trade dress. Retained for edition history and excluded from the count of newly drawn homages. GCD gives September 8, 1979 as the on-sale date, while the supplied catalog gives September 25; this conflict remains unresolved.
Research source ↗ - Marvel Masterworks: The X-Men Vol. 1 TP
Dean White painted over Kirby’s composition. This is a painted reinterpretation, distinguished from the unaltered Kirby cover on the omnibus. This edition paints over Kirby’s original pencils and is grouped with the original drawing. It is not counted as a new homage artwork.
Research source ↗ - X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1 HC
Reuses the original Kirby cover rather than introducing a new homage. Retained as an edition record only.
Research source ↗ - X-Men: Prime #1
Color treatment of the same Todd Nauck artwork as the black-and-white Stan Lee Box exclusive; grouped together for unique-art counts.
Research source ↗ - X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1 HC 2022 Edition
Reuses the Alex Ross painting from the 2009 omnibus. Retained as a later edition, grouped under the 2009 Ross record.
Research source ↗ - X-Men #1
Creator’s store explicitly identifies the Kirby tribute and SDCC 2024 exclusive. Visual comparison shows reuse of the 2009 omnibus painting, with revised trade dress. The companion Storm portrait B cover is different artwork and does not recreate the 1963 composition.

Reproduces the original Kirby cover with altered trade dress. Retained for edition history and excluded from the count of newly drawn homages. GCD gives September 8, 1979 as the on-sale date, while the supplied catalog gives September 25; this conflict remains unresolved.
- CL-XMEN63-0003: Cover homage
Keith Pollard and Al Williamson reinterpret the original battle within a wraparound historical montage. Small character portraits in the publisher box are included in the character review. The supplied July 8 date conflicts with GCD’s June 17, 1986 listing; exact date needs further confirmation.
- CL-XMEN63-0004: Cover homage
New cover artwork despite reprinted interiors; this is not a reuse of Cockrum’s X-Men #104 cover.
- CL-XMEN63-0005: Cover homage
Elephant characters parody Marvel heroes; their borrowed costumes do not make the corresponding Marvel characters present. Blaustein is credited under an earlier professional name on the original publication.
- CL-XMEN63-0006: Cover homage
Includes the small Spider-Man head in the direct-edition barcode box. Thor and Juggernaut both appear in the foreground. Joe Sinnott’s cover-inking attribution remains less certain than Frenz’s pencils.
- CL-XMEN63-0007: Cover homage
GCD credits Ken Meyer Jr., while MyComicShop credits Bill Maus for its regular-cover listing. GCD’s exact Cover X record and the visible KMJ signature take precedence. These are parody characters, not the Marvel originals.
- CL-XMEN63-0008: Cover homage
Exact edition artwork reviewed on October 19, 2026. Original dates and incentive descriptions retained where no stronger edition-specific evidence was found.
- CL-XMEN63-0009: Cover homage

Reuses the original Kirby cover rather than introducing a new homage. Retained as an edition record only.

Painted Alex Ross reinterpretation, later reused on the 2022 omnibus. The supplied DM label is retained pending a publisher-level confirmation of market designation.
- CL-XMEN63-0013: Cover homage
Contemporary announcement by exclusive retailer Apocalypse Comics identifies the homage, Casey Coller pencils, John-Paul Bove colors, and all seven depicted Transformers. Do not transfer the print run of the unrelated All Hail Megatron #12 exclusive.
- CL-XMEN63-0014: Cover homage
The 1:10 color and 1:25 black-and-white editions use the same Jorge Lucas artwork. Ratios are ordering incentives, not total print runs. Individual fantasy character identities remain unresolved.
- CL-XMEN63-0015: Cover homage
Movie-version Avengers reinterpret the original battle arrangement. Native image is small; finer background details remain uncertain.
- CL-XMEN63-0016: Cover homage
Promotional comic from Dutch Bros. Coffee, illustrated by Jeff Egli. The January 1 date appears to be a year-only catalog placeholder; exact distribution date is unverified. Mad Cow is named on the cover; the other character names are only partially resolved.
- CL-XMEN63-0017: Cover homage
Recreates the first Avengers lineup, with Loki in Magneto’s place. Captain America appears as a small portrait in the corner box in addition to the five founding Avengers.

- CL-XMEN63-0021: Reference / related edition
Color treatment of the same Todd Nauck artwork as the black-and-white Stan Lee Box exclusive; grouped together for unique-art counts.
- CL-XMEN63-0022: Cover homage
Joe Jusko’s painted reinterpretation includes Professor X in the corner box. Limited-edition quantities were not independently confirmed.
- CL-XMEN63-0023: Cover homage
Carlos Pacheco’s Secret History connecting variant substitutes X-Man for Beast in its rewritten origin. The visible signatures credit Rafael Fonteriz and colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. alongside Pacheco.
- CL-XMEN63-0024: Cover homage
Publisher credits Nathan Johnson for this webstore exclusive but incorrectly calls it a Giant-Size X-Men #1 homage in its product description. Exact cover inspection shows the X-Men #1 (1963) arrangement. Individual fantasy character names remain unresolved.
- CL-XMEN63-0025: Cover homage
The cover reads Pooh Believers. Winnie-the-Pooh and friends wear superhero-inspired costumes; the Marvel identities being parodied are not assigned as depicted characters. Cover artist and precise edition date remain unverified.

Reuses the Alex Ross painting from the 2009 omnibus. Retained as a later edition, grouped under the 2009 Ross record.

Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia reinterpret the 1963 composition using the second-generation X-Men.
- CL-XMEN63-0029: Cover homage

- CL-XMEN63-0030: Cover homage
Kamala Khan appears among the original X-Men in Federico Vicentini’s reinterpretation; she is not substituted for the entire original cast.
- CL-XMEN63-0031: Cover homage
Fritz Casas homage variant. Kull is recognizable, but the other fantasy characters’ exact identities remain unresolved; the title alone was not used to supply the cast.
- CL-XMEN63-0032: Cover homage
John Romita Jr.’s homage redraws the original five X-Men against Magneto. The separately solicited Elizabeth Torque variant is a different cover and was not confused with this artwork.
- CL-XMEN63-0033: Cover homage
Ethan Young depicts multiple versions of Wolverine. Variations in costume do not establish distinct civilian identities, so the review uses one confirmed Logan tag.
- CL-XMEN63-0034: Cover homage
GCD’s exact cover record identifies all seven costumed characters and credits Anwar Hanano for colors. The Comic Hunter virgin treatment shares this artwork.
- CL-XMEN63-0035: Cover homage
New painted Parel artwork on reprinted interiors. Restored from the source Research Log’s overly broad facsimile exclusion; GCD explicitly identifies the 1963 homage and cover cast.

- CL-XMEN63-0037: Reference / related edition
Creator’s store explicitly identifies the Kirby tribute and SDCC 2024 exclusive. Visual comparison shows reuse of the 2009 omnibus painting, with revised trade dress. The companion Storm portrait B cover is different artwork and does not recreate the 1963 composition.
- CL-XMEN63-0038: Cover homage
Edition-specific GCD record credits Seeley pencils and inks, Reber colors, and explicitly identifies the 1963 homage signed after K + S. Published August 26, 2026; not upcoming. GCD’s exact cover cast is retained provisionally because the final homage scan was not recovered and distributor imagery conflicts with that description. Do not display the downloaded preliminary Seeley image as the verified final homage.
- Original-cover facsimiles, Marvel Milestone and True Believers reprints: Exclude from unique homage counts
These reproduce Kirby’s existing artwork. A facsimile with newly drawn Parel artwork is a distinct exception.
- Jim Lee X-Men #1 (1991) cover tributes: Separate lineage
The present catalog targets the 1963 Kirby cover; modern tributes specifically to Jim Lee’s panoramic 1991 cover are not automatically included.
- Comicology #2 (2000), Mike Allred Atomics cover: Credible lead awaiting exact published-cover review
Original-art dealer identifies a 1963 homage and credits Allred, but the full published magazine cover and all depicted identities were not independently inspected in this pass.
- Strange Academy #7 Todd Nauck store exclusive; Amazing Spider-Man #43 Disney100 variant: Credible leads requiring edition and image follow-up
Comparison indexes identify these as 1963 homages, but exact edition scans and complete character reviews were not completed in this bounded pass.
- Alex Ross X-Men #1 (2024) Storm portrait B cover: Exclude from this composition lineage
Creator’s companion exclusive is a close-up Storm portrait; it does not reproduce the 1963 team-versus-Magneto arrangement.
